Global Cross-linked polymers Market: Introduction

Cross-linked polymers are 3-D structured, thermosetting polymers formed by vulcanization and step polymerization process. A material called crosslinking agent such as polyisocyanate and polycarbodiimide is added to initiate the process, the polymer material is cured and a cross-link is obtained. Feedstock used for formation of cross-linked polymers have more than two functional and reactive sites which help them to grow in all direction to form 3D structure. Bakelite and vulcanized rubber are two important examples of crossed-linked polymers. Cross-link refers to the covalent bond between polymers. When the polymers are formed, its physical and mechanical properties changes depending on the cross-link density. Low cross-link density of polymer makes it less viscous, intermediate density gives polymers an elastomeric property while high density causes polymers to become more rigid. Crosslinking also imparts properties like good texture, resistance to wear & solvent attack, high strength and increased shelf life. Properties of cross-linked polymers are distinct and depend on the feedstock used and the condition at which it is treated. With regards to its thermosetting properties, cross-linked polymers resists the heat and gets degraded at very high temperatures as compared to thermoplastic polymers. Sometimes, the polymers are linked through physical or oxidative crosslinks. In physical cross-links covalent bond is absent and the physical bonds are formed by weak interactions. Physical bonding is used when polymers need to be recycled or remolded. Moreover, when exposed to atmosphere many polymers undergo oxidative crosslinking; however, physical and oxidative cross-linked polymers have narrow scope. Cross-linked polymers are widely used in wires and cables for insulation, coatings (particularly in industrial coatings), tires, pipes, solar panels, regenerative medicines, artificial heart membranes, and many other applications.
